What is cervical screening?
Cervical screening is a health test of the cervix. It helps find problems early, before you feel unwell. Most people’s results are normal and do not detect HPV.
Who can have cervical screening?
You can have cervical screening if:
- You are aged 25 to 65
- You have a cervix
Screening is free in Ireland through CervicalCheck-which is the National cervical screening programme. To contact CervicalCheck by phone you can free call on 1800 45 45 55
When are tests done?
- Ages 25–29: every 3 years
- Ages 30–65: every 5 years, if results are normal
If you are registered with the national screening programme you will get a letter when your test is due.

When can you get a test?
- If you check the CervicalCheck register and it tells you, you are due one
- Get a letter inviting you to attend for cervical screening
- If you are aged 25 and older and did not get a letter inviting you for screening
- You previously choose to not attend screening or you forgot and you are between the age of 25 and 65
How do you book the test?
In Ireland you need to book your own cervical screening test. You can go to your family doctor/GP or registered clinic to book your free test. If you are unsure if your doctor or clinic are registered, press on the link below to search.

If you missed your test
You do not need to wait for a letter.
You can book your test yourself with a GP or clinic.
If you have never had a test
You can still have one if:
- You are aged 25–65
You can register and book a test with a GP or clinic.
