What is the HPV vaccine?

The HPV vaccine helps protect people from a virus called HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).
HPV is very common among men and women and most people clear HPV naturally. The vaccine was first given in Ireland in 2010 to girls and 2019 for boys. It is now used in over 90 countries. The vaccine works best if it is given before someone becomes sexually active.

Is the HPV vaccine safe?

Yes.

The HPV vaccine is very safe.

  • It does not contain live virus
  • It cannot give you HPV
  • It helps your body make protection (antibodies)

The vaccine protects against the type of HPV that causes 9 out of 10 cervical cancers.
Studies since 2006 show the vaccine is safe and works well.

HPV vaccine facts in Ireland

  • In 2010, the vaccine was offered to girls aged 12–13 in schools
  • In 2019, the programme was extended to boys
  • From 2022 to 2023, the Laura Brennan Catch-Up Programme offered free vaccines to people who missed it in school
  • In 2023, this was extended to:
    • males up to 22 years
    • females up to 24 years
  • Over 11,000 people used the catch-up programme

In 2025, the HSE plans a pilot programme to help increase HPV vaccination in Traveller, Migrant, and Roma communities.

At present:

  • The catch-up programme is not running
  • If you want the vaccine outside school, it can cost about €600
  • If you are from the Traveller community you can access it with out charge during the pilot programme (speak to your GP, Community Workers about this)
  • If your child gets the vaccine later, you must pay through your GP
  • Adults who missed it in school must also pay through their GP

How do you reduce your risk of HPV?

You can reduce your risk by:

  • Getting the HPV vaccine
  • Taking part in cervical screening when invited
  • Going for cervical screening even if you never had the vaccine
  • Still going for cervical screening from age 25, even if you are vaccinated
  • Using condoms

Important to remember

  • HPV is very common
  • The HPV vaccine is safe
  • The vaccine offers strong protection
  • Cervical Screening is still important
  • The vaccine does not replace screening
  • Protecting yourself early is best
