Going for Health Care

Some Travellers feel worried when going to the doctor or nurse.
This can be because of bad experiences before.

Cervical screening is very important.
It can help keep you healthy.
It can save lives.

Problem Travellers may have

Some Travellers:

  • Feel afraid of being treated unfairly
  • Feel judged
  • Do not trust the health system
  • Find health information hard to understand
  • Have problems with:
    • Travel
    • Appointments
    • Childcare

Help is available

Travellers’ health workers can help

Traveller Primary Health Care (PHC) Projects support Travellers.

A Traveller health worker can:

  • Explain cervical screening
  • Help book appointments
  • Go with you to the appointment

You do not have to go alone.

You Have Rights

You have the right to be treated with respect.

It is okay to:

  • Ask for a female nurse or doctor
  • Ask questions
  • Ask for more time
  • Ask for things to be explained again

Bring someone you trust

You can bring:

  • A family member
  • A friend
  • A Traveller health worker

This can help you feel safe and calm.

Friendly doctors and clinics

Some doctors understand Traveller culture.

They offer kind and respectful care.

Traveller groups can help you find these doctors.

If you are treated unfairly

Being treated unfairly is not okay.

You can:

  • Talk to the GP clinic
  • Contact the HSE
  • Ask Traveller groups like Pavee Point for help

Looking ahead

In the future, self-testing may be available.

This means you may not need to go to a clinic.

This could help people who feel nervous.

Remember

  • You matter
  • Your health matters
  • Help is available
  • You deserve respect
